OM is the primordial sound pronouced as in AUM, all syllables prolonged to a fair length of breathing time.
‘A’ The letter’s briefest possible sound as we pronounce in umbrella is the mother of all spoken word and it symbolises TRUTH (i.e.’Saata’).
‘U’ pronounced as in ‘you’, symbolises the mind-intelligence ( ‘Chitta’).
‘M’ pronounced as in ‘umbrella’ more intoned as in ‘uncle’, symbolises the ultimate HAPPINESS (i.e. ‘Ananda’ ).
‘AUM ‘ So let us utter the holy sound of Au>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>M >>>>>>>>........ This is the sound of rotating universe. This is the sound which one can hear within oneself when one’s physical doors (so called’9’ windows) are closed to the world as per Saint Kabir. He used to call it ‘ Anhad Naad’ or the sound without limit i.e. without beginning or the end.

Om is thus ‘Satta’+’Chitta’ +’Ananda’. This is the world symbol which represents ‘Brahma’, all that is animate, inanimate, inclusive of the known universe as such and those that are unknown. The word ‘AUM’ is central to the activity of meditation, which actually is an inacive state of peace. This sound is considered to be a mystic vibration, also a sacred ‘mantra’ to the faithful.
A supreme being, the source or essence, known as ‘Brahman’ or ‘Brahman’, is attributed with the creation of material universe by Hindu mythology. This is identified by the sacred syllable Om or ‘AUM’. All three members of the triad, ‘Bhahma’,’Vishnu’ and ‘Mahesh’ are considered a part of that supreme Being while all other ‘Avtars’ ( Gods and Godesses, human and other physical shapes ) and different manifestations thereof.

The learned authors have mentioned that ‘A’, ‘U’ and ‘M’ symbolise spech (vaak ), mind (mana ) and breath of life (p`aNa ) , like leaves held together with a twig, all speech is held together by Om (! ). Om is everlasting spirit,, symbol of serenity, divinity, majestic power, om-nipotence and universality.
The letters of ‘AUM’ represent three genders, three qualities ( ‘Guna’), three aspects of time i.e. past, present and future as also the three ‘Gurus’, the mother, the father, the preceptor. They also represent the aforesaid triad of divinity, the Creator, the Sustainer and the Destroyer of the universe.

The realization of ‘AUM ‘ liberates the human spirit from the confines of the body, mind, intellect and ego. When one meditates upon ‘AUM’ , one remains steady, pure and faithful. The devotee becomes a great soul. He finds the presence of Supreme Spirit within and earns the peace which is free from fear, dissolution and death. Lord Krishna says to warrior Arjuna in Chapter9, shloka 13 of The Geeta, any one whose soul departs from the body in last moments of life, uttering the single word symbol of Brahma, ‘AUM’, attains a higher state of the soul. This is of course against the back-drop of earlier practice by the faithful one.

Jai Sai Ram !
